What is Porcelain Dental Crown?
Porcelain dental crown is the process of covering the surface of teeth that have lost material for various reasons with porcelain material. Porcelain dental crowns extend the life of the tooth without causing damage and provide an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
Does Crowning the Teeth Damage the Tooth?
No, crowning the teeth does not damage the tooth. On the contrary, covering the tooth with porcelain extends its lifespan and provides a protective application.
What is the Difference Between Porcelain Dental Crowns and Porcelain Bridges?
Porcelain dental crowns are applied to a single tooth. Porcelain bridges, on the other hand, are used to replace at least one missing tooth by reducing the adjacent teeth and using them as support. This way, the missing teeth are restored.
What is Metal-Supported Porcelain Dental Crown?
Porcelain is a delicate material and requires a strong underlying structure. Metal-supported porcelain dental crowns are made from a metal alloy and, although still the most commonly used treatment, they can cause a gray reflection on the gums over time. In such cases, zirconium dental crowns are recommended in areas where aesthetics are crucial.
What is Zirconium-Supported Porcelain Dental Crown?
As an alternative to metal-supported porcelain crowns, zirconium porcelain crowns, which offer a very high aesthetic result, are preferred. Zirconium dental crowns are highly resistant to chewing forces and provide satisfactory aesthetic results. Thanks to their light permeability, zirconium crowns, which are the best alternative to natural teeth, fully capture the appearance of natural teeth.
How Many Sessions Does It Take to Complete a Porcelain Dental Crown?
Porcelain dental crowns are typically completed in 2-3 sessions. In the first session, the teeth are trimmed, and an impression is taken. In the second session, the porcelain crown or bridge, specially produced for the patient in the laboratory, is tried on. It is then fixed and cemented in the mouth according to the patient's preference. To prevent the patient from being toothless during the laboratory phase, temporary teeth are made and placed in the mouth in the same session using the impression taken in the first session. Thus, the patient leaves with temporary teeth after the first session. In CAD-CAM systems, the permanent porcelain tooth is finished 2 to 3 hours after tooth preparation, and the porcelain crown is completed on the same day.
